One of the biggest joys of being an event designer is when a couple have clear and deeply meaningful passions that they want to weave through their wedding. For Monique and Callum, it was reading and chess – each a hugely important component of what makes them who they are.

Together, we designed a colour-rich, immersive and sophisticatedly whimsical wedding weekend at Worstead Estate in Norfolk. Bright pinks, reds and corals set the tone for fun (and complemented the classic Penguin book details perfectly). Books featured throughout the décor, with confetti cones made from pages of Monique’s favourite read, to a Penguin Classics themed table plan. Callum is a champion chess player, so of course we had to add a giant chess board to the gardens, alongside individual chess pieces at each place setting.

The couple chose a live illustrator to entertain guests during the reception – creating a meaningful souvenir for each of their loved ones with an experience that was quirky yet undeniably elegant – exactly the sort of balance that’s music to my ears.
